Ghana – GFA threatens relegation for criticising officiating

Sammy Anim Addo, a former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member, publicly condemned the GFA, accusing referee Maxwell Hanson of engaging in questionable activities on their behalf.

This criticism stemmed from Accra Lions’ complaints of unfair officiating during their recent 1-0 loss to Dreams FC in the Ghana Premier League matchweek 16 at the Tuba Astro Turf.

Accra Lions voiced their frustration, claiming they were unfairly treated, sparking discussions among football enthusiasts and calls for significant reforms in Ghanaian football.

In response, Dreams FC defended the referee, pointing out that every club has faced poor officiating at some point and accusing Accra Lions of hypocrisy.

Anim Addo, president of Young Apostles FC, openly criticized Maxwell Hanson on X (formerly Twitter), labeling him a “hatchet man” and accusing the GFA NOWAHALAZONE of suppressing his concerns about officiating.

“Maxwell Hanson is their man for ‘dirty works,'” Anim Addo declared. “I raised alarms months ago, but faced opposition and attempts to silence me by the GFA NOWAHALAZONE. His actions continue to harm the league’s credibility.”

Anim Addo disclosed that he had been threatened with relegation due to his outspokenness.

“I have been warned the GFA might resort to unfair practices to relegate Young Apostles,” he stated. “But relegation is not my greatest concern. My dedication to Ghanaian football remains unshaken.”

The Call for Immediate Reforms

Under Kurt Okraku’s leadership, Ghana football has faced challenges, drawing criticisms especially after the national teams’ poor performances, such as the Black Stars. Calls are made for the GFA to take action and for government intervention.
