A’Ibom Probes Deaths of Mother and Newborn in State Hospital

The Akwa Ibom State Government has launched a formal probe after the tragic deaths of a young mother and her newborn, which occurred at the General Hospital in Ikot Ekpene following a caesarean section.

A video that surfaced on social media—and was referenced by PUNCH Online on Sunday—captured a grieving family member accusing hospital staff of medical negligence after the woman allegedly suffered excessive bleeding due to labour complications. The footage has ignited widespread public concern and demanding calls for justice and accountability.

In a swift response to the incident, Governor Pastor Umo Eno extended heartfelt condolences to the family and instructed the Health Commissioner, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, to assemble a commission of inquiry. The panel will include both medical and legal professionals.

This commission has been tasked with thoroughly investigating the facts surrounding the incident and recommending effective strategies to prevent similar tragedies in the future, as outlined in an official statement released by the commissioner on Sunday.

The statement read: “The Akwa Ibom State Government is aware of a video making rounds on social media concerning the heartbreaking loss of a young mother and her newborn after a caesarean procedure at General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene.

“His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, extends profound sympathy to the affected family and has directed the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, to promptly form a special commission of inquiry made up of medical and legal experts to determine the facts of this tragic situation and recommend steps to avert a recurrence.”

“Acting on this directive, Honourable Commissioner Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John led a Ministry of Health team to the hospital at 12:10 a.m. for an immediate on-site assessment and to gather firsthand accounts from those involved.”

The statement further reaffirmed the government’s dedication to reducing maternal mortality, labeling it a top policy priority.

The Ministry of Health has committed to a fully transparent investigation process. Should the inquiry reveal any acts of negligence, those responsible will face appropriate disciplinary action according to civil service and professional standards.
