How South Africans Are Styling the PUMA Mostro in 2025

The PUMA Mostro isn’t simply footwear—it’s a cultural icon making waves once again. After last night’s unforgettable launch event at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, one thing is clear: this “monster” is back and it’s redefining style on the city’s streets.

Taking its name from the Italian word for “monster,” the Mostro originally debuted in 1999. Its aggressive, tooth-like sole, bold strap, and futuristic design turned heads during the peak of Y2K fashion. Now, as the sneaker world looks to the future, the Mostro is making a dynamic return—gracing runways worldwide and capturing the imagination of a new wave of tastemakers.

Inside the Monster’s Mind

To mark its comeback, PUMA transformed the Castle into the MOSTRO Lab—an immersive, otherworldly experience where sneaker culture met avant-garde art. Stepping inside felt less like entering an event and more like journeying through the veins of some living, breathing creature.

Cape Town creative Inka Kendzia was the mastermind behind the event’s centrepiece—the Room of Refraction. This interactive installation paired pulsing lights with ambient sounds, while sneakers suspended from above held hidden cameras, turning every guest into a living part of the spectacle. Warped visuals of attendees were projected across the room, making the line between observer and participant thrillingly blurred. It was strange, captivating, and pure Mostro energy.

Street Style, Reinvented

This was no ordinary sneaker launch. The entire evening buzzed with creative expression—guests sported instant flash tattoos, sparkly tooth gems, and even gave their kicks wild makeovers with spikes, gems, and neon laces. Even the food matched the night’s sci-fi aesthetic, with pitch-black bao buns and electric pink hummus served in labware, and drinks offered up in serum bags fit for a villain’s laboratory. Outside, the Castle’s centuries-old fountain became a high-fashion photo zone, complete with cinematic smoke, mirrored backdrops, and tentacled sculptures gripping the Mostro logo—instantly Instagrammable and undeniably iconic.

And the style on display was next level. Cape Town’s creative scene turned up in retro-inspired Y2K outfits, standout streetwear, and rare PUMA archive gems, transforming the night into a futuristic runway with a nostalgic twist.

From Cult Classic to Must-Have

Loved by icons like Madonna and Lenny Kravitz, the Mostro is once again stealing the spotlight. It’s been seen on New York runways, Paris streets, and even reimagined in a 3D-printed version by ASAP Rocky.

South African trendsetters are now putting their own spin on it—pairing Mostros with revamped denim, cutting-edge techwear, or wildly oversized tailoring. The result? A mashup of surf-inspired minimalism and bold, underground style.

What to Cop

PUMA’s latest drop features a full range of Mostro models, including the Mostro OG, Mostro Perf, UR Mostro, and the Mostro Boot Leather—each one fusing retro elements with a contemporary vibe. A highlight is the limited Mostro Alto Boot in metallic gold, a nod to the brand’s early 2000s archive and a future-forward collector’s piece.

“Mostro appeals to trend enthusiasts. These pioneers of play are innovators, unafraid to make bold, trend-setting style statements,” says Brett Bellinger, PUMA South Africa’s Marketing Director.

The bottom line? PUMA Mostro is back in a big way. In 2025, this monster isn’t lurking—it’s leading the pack and defining what’s next in street style.
