Mental health struggles are affecting more young people than ever before in South Africa. Recent statistics show that over 60 percent of the nation’s youth have reported facing mental wellbeing challenges. In response, Sandton City has teamed up with the Riky Rick Foundation to launch “Words That Heal,” a new campaign urging the public to share heartfelt messages of hope and support.
What is the Words That Heal Campaign?
“Words That Heal” is a nationwide mental health campaign that encourages South Africans to send in positive voice notes. These contributions will be combined into a collaborative anthem, which will be available on streaming platforms later this year. All funds raised through the song will benefit the Riky Rick Foundation, directly supporting no-cost therapy sessions for young people in need.
Founded to honour the legacy of the late rapper Riky Rick, the Foundation champions his vision of harnessing creativity for meaningful change. Their approach—centered on “artivism”—encourages youth to find healing and connection through artistic expression and community support.
How to Get Involved
If you have a few words that could uplift or encourage someone, why not take a moment to record a short voice message? Simply send your voice note via WhatsApp before the deadline. Your words could become part of a powerful, collaborative musical message—and help someone realize they aren’t alone.
Phase Two Launches During Mental Health Month
Later in the year, during Mental Health Month (September–October), the campaign will come to life at Sandton City. Visitors can listen to the completed song alongside tracks from Riky Rick’s final album as part of a moving tribute. There will also be a pop-up store, where you can browse exclusive merchandise and personalize items on site, in partnership with visual artist Samurai Farai. All sales, plus donations from corporate partners, will go to the Riky Rick Foundation’s ongoing mental health and youth creativity initiatives.
Why This Campaign Makes a Difference
This campaign is about more than making music—it’s about forging connections, telling real stories, and creating safe spaces to heal. Riky Rick once said, “Please believe in young people. Give them as many opportunities as they need to prove themselves.” The Words That Heal campaign brings this philosophy to life, empowering us all to be part of the journey toward hope and healing.
