Filling Station in Anambra Destroyed by Fire

A fire broke out at a filling station in Awka during the discharge of petroleum products, causing damages exceeding N100 million, as confirmed by Mr. Chukwudi Chiketa, the Anambra State Fire Chief.

The station, known as Okeb Filling Station, is situated on the Awka stretch of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Chiketa disclosed that the fire erupted at the station around 2:00 pm on a Friday without prior notification to the fire service.

He expressed regret that the lack of early alert prevented a more substantial salvage operation from the blaze, resulting in the significant financial loss.

Chiketa emphasized the importance of scheduling product discharge at night to avoid such incidents and urged petrol station operators to prioritize safety measures.

He advised station owners to maintain fire safety equipment like industrial fire extinguishers and sand buckets readily available and ensure a spacious and accessible workplace for emergencies.

The fire destroyed six petrol pump stands, the product-carrying truck, and three utility vehicles.

In a bid to enhance emergency response, the state fire chief encouraged the public to contact his personal number in addition to the official emergency line for prompt assistance.

Following the episode, Mr. Okechukwu Ebele, the station owner, expressed gratitude for the safety of his staff despite the losses incurred.

An eyewitness, Mr. Uche Ifeleoma, recounted that a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) needed electrical services before discharging, leading to an electrical spark that triggered the fire.

He shared the challenges faced in reaching the fire service via the emergency line and praised their arrival, which helped save parts of the station.

The Okeb filling station is a multifaceted facility, offering PMS, DPK, AGO, a Mini Mart, Lubricants, and a Restaurant, among other services, as reported by NAN.
