Nigeria Prioritizes World Cup Qualifiers – Troost-Ekong

Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has praised the squad’s mindset and sense of urgency as they gear up for two pivotal 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

With only one win in their last six qualifying games, the Super Eagles know their hopes hang in the balance. They must secure a victory over Rwanda at Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday to keep their World Cup dream alive before heading to South Africa for another high-stakes clash with Bafana Bafana three days later.

Nigeria’s qualification chances are further complicated by a potential points reduction for group leaders South Africa, after fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho in March. This ruling could have a significant impact, but Troost-Ekong is adamant that the team must focus on winning their remaining fixtures to control their own fate.

“We must take responsibility for our destiny by winning every game left in the series,” the skipper noted, reinforcing the team’s determination.

Troost-Ekong recognizes just how vital the remaining four matches are, beginning with Saturday’s showdown against Rwanda.

“The team is highly motivated. We’re all looking forward to Saturday’s game,” the captain told NFF TV.

“It’s a crucial phase for us, starting this weekend. We’re fully aware of what’s at stake and are putting everything into our preparation.”

Currently, after six matches, the Super Eagles sit fourth in Group C with seven points—six adrift of group leaders South Africa, who have 13. Rwanda and Benin Republic both have eight points, while Lesotho and Zimbabwe trail with six and four points respectively.

While Rwanda faces bottom-placed Zimbabwe in their upcoming tie, Nigeria will travel to Bloemfontein to meet the current group leaders, South Africa.

Following the June fixtures, the Eagles will resume their qualifying campaign in September with a visit to Lesotho and then round off at home against Benin Republic in October.
