Celtic have announced the signing of Kelechi Iheanacho on a one-year deal, just a day after the Nigerian forward parted ways with Sevilla.
Iheanacho entered negotiations with Brendan Rodgers’ squad late on Monday after Sevilla ended his contract, but the agreement wasn’t finalized in time to meet the registration deadline. As a result, the 28-year-old’s move was officially confirmed at 11:06 pm on Tuesday night.
The Scottish Premiership champions had been searching for attacking reinforcements for several days. Initially, they tried to bring in Kasper Dolberg from Anderlecht, but Ajax swooped in at the last minute. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s David Datro Fofana declined a proposed loan switch to Glasgow.
With Adam Idah completing a £7 million transfer to Swansea before a new striker was secured, Celtic found themselves lacking firepower up front. The Hoops did acquire Hammarby IF winger Sebastian Tounekti for £5.2 million on Deadline Day, yet Iheanacho’s arrival came the following day to bolster the attack further.
Brendan Rodgers expressed his excitement about the new signing: “I know Kelechi very well and I’m confident in what he offers. He’s an exceptionally talented player—full of ability, drive and energy.
“I’m certain he’ll settle in quickly here at Celtic, and our supporters are going to appreciate his qualities on the pitch. He brings valuable experience and, at 28, is at the height of his career. We believe he will play a significant role for us and make a substantial impact on the team.”
Last season, Iheanacho spent his loan spell with Middlesbrough, gaining additional experience in the Championship.
