Controversy has erupted in Adamawa State following the recent Ganye by-election for the State House of Assembly, which took place on 16 August 2025. The outcome, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate victorious. However, the Adamawa chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly rejected the result, insisting that their party actually secured wins in every ward across the constituency.
PDP Raises Concerns Over Electoral Process
The PDP’s response did not stop at rejecting the official results. Party officials and supporters have alleged that the electoral process was marred by irregularities and manipulations. According to statements from PDP representatives, the announced outcome does not reflect the will of the people in Ganye, and there are calls for a thorough review of the entire process.
Local observers note that the Adamawa political landscape has been highly competitive, with both APC and PDP commanding significant grassroots support. The outcome of the Ganye by-election has therefore attracted widespread attention, not just within Adamawa, but across Nigeria and among West African political analysts. Free and fair elections remain a cornerstone of Nigeria’s evolving democracy, with passionate reactions reflecting underlying tensions between the country’s main political parties.
PDP Chairman Addresses Election Fallout and Resignation Rumours
“I am deeply grateful to God for the Ganye by-election. I am so happy because PDP won the election but the result was rigged by the opposition party, APC. The APC prior to this election had planned to rig it from all angles and areas. They started by distributing food items to the people and even purchasing votes, because they knew they cannot win the election in Ganye,” he said.
In the wake of the disputed results, Barrister Shehu, chairman of the PDP in Adamawa State, spoke candidly about swirling rumours surrounding his possible resignation. With speculation mounting that he would step down if the party failed to clinch victory in Ganye, Shehu addressed both party faithful and the general public.
Barrister Shehu did not shy away from pointing fingers, accusing senior APC officials of direct interference in the Ganye by-election. According to Shehu, as reported by local media, such interference undermines the credibility of the electoral process and threatens the principles of fairness and justice in Nigerian politics.
“Despite the intimidations, we are still challenging the matching and PDP has done its best. It’s so unfortunate that we caught the APC Zonal Chairman of the North East, Comrade Mustapha Salihu, snatching ballot boxes and BVAS machines from the ad-hoc staff. We investigated and found them hidden in his car and he was immediately handed over to the police. But surprisingly, in the night, he came again to disrupt the collation process at the ward collation centre. This act exhibited by the APC has shown that they know they can’t win the election,” he alleged.

Addressing the speculation about his resignation, Shehu made it clear he remains steadfast in his role as party chairman, regardless of the election outcome. “No matter the result, our commitment to the people of Adamawa State remains unshaken,” he reportedly stated, emphasizing that his focus is on ensuring that all campaign promises made by the PDP, especially those by the governor, are fulfilled for the benefit of Ganye residents.
“The rumour is true, but PDP didn’t lose the Ganye by-election and that is why I didn’t resign from being the party’s state chairman. I know that the election was rigged by APC, therefore anyone who felt PDP lost the election should religiously take an oath with the holy book and then I will write my resignation letter, stating my reason. I will not resign, because PDP won the election.”
He reassured PDP supporters that the governor from their party would continue working diligently to deliver on development pledges made to the people of Ganye, regardless of any temporary political setbacks. This message was targeted at quelling unrest and bolstering the morale of party loyalists who have been actively engaged in the region’s political process.
“The executive governor of Adamawa State will not restrain from fulfilling his promises to the entire people of Ganye before the election. He has pledged to fulfill all the promises he made to them because he knows that it was PDP that won the election,” Shehu said.
PDP Calls for Unity, Honesty, and Youth Engagement
In addition to addressing immediate political concerns, Barr. Shehu took the opportunity to thank the party’s grassroots supporters, with a particular focus on the youth. He urged all citizens to remain steadfast in the pursuit of fairness, transparency, and integrity—both in their politics and everyday life.
According to Shehu, Nigeria’s future rests upon the shoulders of honest youth who are actively participating in democratic processes. He called on them to reject any temptation to engage in violence or political manipulation, encouraging continued engagement through peaceful and legal means. Local analysts have noted that the involvement of youth in Nigerian elections is critical to fostering a culture of democratic accountability and ensuring that leaders remain answerable to their constituents.
Across social media and in towns across Adamawa, both disappointment and hope have resonated among party supporters and neutral observers alike. Many are calling for further improvements to electoral transparency, with some voices advocating for more robust independent monitoring at polling stations in future elections.
The Broader Nigerian Context: Implications for Democracy
The disputed Ganye by-election is not an isolated event, but part of a larger trend in Nigerian and West African politics where allegations of electoral irregularities often generate headlines. Analysts point to the importance of strong institutions like INEC in ensuring that electoral disputes are resolved transparently and peacefully. The robustness of Nigeria’s democracy, they argue, depends on every stakeholder—from political parties and security agencies to civil society and the judiciary—upholding the integrity of the process.
For ordinary Nigerians and West Africans, fair and credible elections mean more than just statistics: they translate into infrastructure development, wider access to social services, and increased trust in government. These issues matter not only within Nigeria but carry weight across the continent, where democratic consolidation is a key factor in regional stability and growth.
On the international scene, many observers watch regional elections as bellwethers for the health of democracy in Sub-Saharan Africa. While day-to-day political disputes are to be expected, Nigeria’s ability to resolve them peacefully is seen as a positive example by neighbouring countries. Local reactions across the region often mirror Nigeria’s own debates, as shared values and challenges connect West African countries in their pursuit of political and economic progress.
Spotlight: Remarkable Police Rescue Ends 11-Year Ordeal
Earlier, authorities in Adamawa delivered a note of hope to the state with the successful rescue of a girl who had been abducted 11 years ago. According to official statements, the Adamawa State Police Command achieved this breakthrough through a combination of persistence, teamwork, and active collaboration with local communities. This operation, conducted under the direct oversight of Commissioner of Police Dankombo Morris Falings and the NOWAHALAZONE operational unit, is being applauded across social circles and highlights the tangible benefits of strong law enforcement grounded in public trust.
While many challenges remain for the police, the successful resolution of this case offers a glimmer of hope to families grappling with similar circumstances. It also underscores the significance of community partnerships and the need for citizens to remain vigilant and proactive in countering crime. Such achievements build bridges between law enforcement and the people, signalling that collaborative efforts can yield real results in the ongoing fight for safety and justice.
Conclusion: The Way Forward for Adamawa, Nigeria, and Beyond
As the dust settles from the Ganye by-election, the issues at stake resonate with communities not only in Adamawa but across Nigeria and West Africa. Will this electoral contest serve as a turning point for votes transparency and greater youth participation? Or will skepticism over outcomes persist in the absence of further reforms? One thing is certain—the call for honesty, unity, and active civic engagement has never been stronger.
